Storm Floris Skirts Ireland Leaving Thousands Without Power

🌬️ Storm Floris Brings Wind, Rain, and Power Outages to Ireland

Storm Floris swept across Ireland over the August Bank Holiday weekend, leaving thousands without power and bringing strong winds, rain, and disruption, particularly in the northwest.

More than 10,000 homes and businesses lost electricity, with areas like Tuam in Co. Galway among the hardest hit.1 Wind gusts almost reached 100km/h in Ireland’s north-west coast, hitting Ireland with Status Yellow wind and rain warnings in multiple coastal counties and making travel hazardous in affected regions.1

While the worst of the storm missed Ireland, heavy rain and wind still caused issues including flight cancellations, fallen trees and branches, and power lines down, especially in coastal areas. Fortunately, no major structural damage has been reported.

🔌 What to Expect Next
Met Éireann has advised continued caution near the coast due to potential wave surges, but the forecast is easing: we can expect sunny spells and temperatures up to 21°C, with the possibility of more scattered showers midweek.1

🏡 Tips to Stay Prepared
Storms like Floris are a good reminder to:

  • Secure loose outdoor items like trampolines or garden furniture.
  • Check your home emergency kit like batteries, torches, and backup power sources can come in handy.
  • Stay updated via Met Éireann or local council alerts, especially if you're travelling or outdoors.
  • Review your home insurance plan to ensure you have adequate coverage for storm damage and unexpected repairs.
