Survey Of 15,000 Finds 99% Of Health Insurance Policyholders Have Felt Negative Affects As A Result Of Market Exodus
Consumer network One Big Switch has today released a report that finds Irish consumers have felt significant negative impacts as a consequence of the 300,000+ Private Health Insurance policyholders who have left the market since it’s peak in 2008.
The report, based on feedback from more than 15,000 consumers, is one of the largest health insurance surveys ever carried out in Ireland.
According to the Big Health Insurance Report:
- 99% of those with Health Insurance claim they have felt a negative impact as a result of people leaving the market
- Of this 99%, more than half claim their premiums have ‘skyrocketed’ as a consequence
- 1/3 of those who’ve given up their Health Insurance have delayed temporarily or permanently a significant medical treatment or procedure as a result of giving up their Private Health Insurance
The report also shows that 9/10 registrants consider Private Health Insurance to be a necessary spend.
Sarah Ryan, One Big Switch’s Director of Campaigns, said the comprehensive report highlighted the helplessness felt by the community.
“It is clear from the results that many people are deeply conflicted when it comes to health insurance. People are suffering as a result of rising premiums but at the same time value their Health Insurance as a necessary spend so can’t give it up.
Understandably so, when you consider the alarming number of people who have delayed treatment or a procedure as a result of giving up their Private Health Insurance.’’
The overwhelming reason these people have given up their Private Health Insurance is because they find it “Too expensive” (82%).
One Big Switch are encouraging consumers to register for the people power campaign; the Big Health Insurance Switch at www.OneBigSwitch.ie. One Big Switch plan to use the buying power of the 15,000+ registrants to negotiate more affordable Health Insurance offers for all. Once an offer is negotiated, One Big Switch will distribute it to their membership base.
