Storm Chandra: Ireland Under Water
Ireland has woken up to a landscape changed by Storm Chandra. Though the strongest winds and rain have passed, the damage has already been done in the form of record-breaking river levels and widespread flooding across the country.
Reasons behind the severity
The Met Éireann warned that the heavy rain combined with already saturated grounds and high river levels could lead to more flooding. The warning alarms the east and southeast of Ireland as they continue to assess the damages caused by Storm Chandra. A status yellow rain has been issued for Northern Ireland by the Met Office until 6PM Friday 30th as even light rain could cause additional flooding, as grounds are still wet and river levels are still high.
Heroic Rescues Amid Rising Waters
Even with their own struggles with the weather warnings, rising stories of communities showing resilience have been taking the light. In Enniscorthy, local volunteer groups like Slaney Search & Rescue have been working through the night, at one point using boats to rescue a family with a young baby from a flooded apartment. In Antrim, a married couple was rescued from their flooded home by firefighters. They have said that the water level was up to their thighs as they were evacuated from their house. They said that “The fridge was floating, the freezer was floating in the kitchen", adding that the downstairs of their property was now "totally wrecked".
As Ireland moves into recovery, the focus shifts from immediate danger and safety to the long process of repair. While community spirit is high, the reality of fixing water-damaged homes and cars can feel overwhelming.
