Grocery Prices in Ireland Are Still Rising – Here’s You Can Cope

Despite a general slowdown in inflation, Irish households are still feeling the pinch at the checkout. According to Kantar Worldpanel, grocery price inflation has nearly doubled over the past year, reaching 4.96% compared to 2.5% the previous year .

So, what’s driving this ongoing spike? Experts point to global supply chain issues, rising energy costs, and ongoing economic pressures. Interestingly, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) hasn’t found evidence of price gouging, which means the increases likely aren’t due to unfair retailer practices but rather broader market challenges.1

Strategies to Manage Rising Grocery Costs:

  1. Shop around: Prices can vary a lot between stores. Try discount supermarkets for everyday items.
  2. Choose own-brand alternatives: Supermarket home brands often match or even exceed the quality of big-name products for less.
  3. Use vouchers and loyalty apps: Keep an eye out for deals and rewards programs that can add up over time.
  4. Plan ahead: Going in with a list (and a full stomach!) can help you avoid impulse buys and stick to your budget.

While we can’t control global food prices, finding savings in other areas of the household budget can help ease the pressure. That’s where One Big Switch comes in, bringing members offers on energy, insurance, and more, to help stretch your money further!
