PEOPLE POWER CAMPAIGN SEEKS 10,000 IRISH HOUSEHOLDS TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST ENERGY PRICE RISE CRISIS
One Big Switch have today launched the Big Energy Switch campaign. They’re calling on 10,000 Irish homes to join them to fight back against relentless energy price rises and to promote switching.
Irish wholesale electricity and gas prices increased by 23% and 22% respectively over the past 12 months*. This lead to price-hike notices from 6 out of 9 electricity providers since the end of 2018.
Annual energy price rises are now just a fact of Irish life. What shouldn’t be, is not fighting back.
This year marks the 15th year the Irish electricity market has been wholly open to competition.
Competitive markets allow customers to pick their providers. In turn it encourages energy providers to compete for those customers, and as a result; drive down prices. However the facts remain:
- Since market competition opened, 50% of Irish households have still never switched,
- Of those that switched in 2017, 51% failed to switch again in 2018.[1] Despite the fact
- the average savings for a family who switches is €350 a year[2] or €1400 over 4 years[3]
To save on energy bills, families need to engage in competition and switch every year. The families that have been switching annually have been saving big. Those who haven’t; have been losing big.
One Big Switch want 10,000 families to join them in their campaign by March 15. They plan to unlock market beating energy offers for registrants. All energy providers are invited to make offers.
Once a market beating offer is achieved by a single provider. One Big Switch will send the offer to registrants. They can choose to switch to it then if they like. There is no cost or obligation.
One Big Switch Director of campaigns, David Liston launched the Big Energy Switch today;
“15 years of competition is a long time. Half the population have never switched, meaning they’ve been over-paying for 15 years. I’d hate to think about how many euros they’ve lost.
“For anyone who hasn’t switched and saved before. I’d encourage them to join our campaign today. Once we get 10,000 fresh registrants we should be able to come up with a great offer.
“After that, it’s up to them. They can switch and save, or use it as leverage to re-negotiate with their own provider or to negotiate with an alternative provider. Getting a discount is all we care about.
One Big Switch has over 150,000 members all across Ireland. The added 10,000 in a short period of time will strengthen their immediate negotiating power. Joining is cost and obligation free.
